Series 7 to Air in August?

Posted by The Doctor on May 9, 2012 at 10:05 AM Comments comments (0)

It seem likely that series 7 will start being broadcast in August.

The Guardian today reported that the first episode will be screened at the 2012 Edinburgh International Televison Festival, which this year rakes place 23rd-35th August. Last year "Let's Kill Hitler" was screened at the festival and was shown on BBC1 the next day.

If the same happens this year the episode will air on Saturday 25th August. If this does happen it seems likely five episodes would air and then there would a gap before the Christmas Special. Of course nothing is as yet confirmed.

You can find out about Series 7 on our guide to the series.

Matt Smith popped up on tonight's edition of CBBC show Blue Peter to launch this year's Script to Scene competition where primary school children have the chance to write a mini-episode of Doctor Who. Last year they created Death is the Only Answer which you can view on our Mini-episodes page.

Here's the Matt Smith clip which oddly enough is a sort of sequel to the Second Doctor story "The Mind Robber". It's set in the same place anyway!

Original Sarah Jane Revealed

Posted by The Doctor on January 10, 2012 at 6:40 PM Comments comments (0)

It has long been known that Elisabeth Sladen was not the actress who was originally set to play Sarah Jane Smith but she refused to tell the world who that person was. The news was revealed on the new DVD release of "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" and the original actress was April Walker.

Walker is probably best known these days for her guest role in Fawlty Towers as Jean Walker in the episode "The Wedding Party". Walker worked in rehearseals for The Time Warrior but allegedly the pairing of Pertwee's Doctor and Walker's Sarah Jane didn't work: she was a tall and more obviously strong character, along the lines of Pertwee's first companion, Liz Shaw (Caroline John).

It's believed that Pertwee was unhappy with the decision but it would ultimately have been producer Barry Letts who recast the role. Walker was reportedly paid for both The Time Warrior and the rest of that series.

Who knows what could have been? Maybe in a parallel universe there is a woman called Jean Walker starring in The Sarah Jane Adventures. For us though, Elisabeth Sladen was the perfect Sarah Jane.

He went on to add that, “The Doctor is going to meet a new friend, but I’m not going to tell you anything about he, she… or it.”

And he also informed us he believes that River Song will return in the next series too!

Missing Episodes Found

Posted by The Doctor on December 12, 2011 at 1:45 PM Comments comments (0)

Two missing episodes of Doctor Who from the 60s have been rediscovered.

The first is Episode 3 of William Hartnell's 1965 tale "Galaxy 4" and the second is Episode 2 of Patrick Troughton's 1967 story "The Underwater Menace".

Both episodes were purchased by film collector Terry Burnett at a village fete near Southampton in the early '80s, with the copies believed to have originated from the ABC channel in Australia.

They were screened this afternoon for the first time since original transmission, as part of the British Film Institute's 'Missing Believed Wiped' event. Details of a commercial release will be confirmed in 2012.

You can watch clips from both the episodes here.

Moffat Dismisses Who Movie

Posted by The Doctor on December 2, 2011 at 10:25 AM Comments comments (0)

Today Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has dismissed the idea of a Doctor Who movie. This comes two weeks after director David Yates told Variety he was in line to direct a film version which would "start from scratch".

Taking to Twitter this morning, the writer said: “To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.”

Moffat contextualised Yates’ remark in another tweet, saying: “David Yates, great director, was speaking off the cuff, on a red carpet.”

In a statement issued to a national newspaper, Moffat said that Doctor Who is “a vitally important BBC brand with a huge international audience” and one which “not even Hollywood can start from scratch”.

The producer also revealed that as yet “there simply are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment” but “if and when the movie happens it will need to star television's Doctor Who - and there's only ever one of those at a time."
