- Showrunner Steven Moffat has talked about the show's 50th anniversary. “I’ve got various plans, but all I can say emphatically is it will be huge,” Steven Moffat tells TVLine.

“It won’t be just one thing…. We’ll be doing lots of stuff,” is all Moffat would concede. “The plans are quite extensive, and changing all the time. Oh my God, we will hit that year very, very hard indeed.”

And what did he say when he was asked if other Doctor's would return? “Possibly…. It’s so far in the future, it’s only a set of notions,”.

- BBC books have unveiled some new titles that will be released on the 13th October. The first is an updated version of the Doctor Who Encyclopedia. It covers every episode from 2005 onwards, including the Eleventh Doctor's first two series. The second is The Brilliant Book 2012, the official guide to series 6. There is more info and images here.

- Torchwood: Miracle Day will now air in New Zealand at some point in the future as it has been aquired by Prime.

- Karen Gillan is to star in new independent comedy film "Not Another Happy Ending".  Gillan plays a beautiful but eccentric writer of miserable, but best selling fiction who’s blocked on her latest novel since she became successful and happy. In a bid to break her block, her publisher (played by Emun Elliott) sets about trying to make her life more miserable, only to realize he is in love with her.

Production is set for late 2011/early 2012 which begs the question when will series 7 be filmed? And perhaps we won't see Amy Pond as a proper companion next year?

- Matt Smith has said: "I’m shooting for the title of the actor who played the Doctor the longest. Now, that’s a title I’d be proud to have."  Excellent news!

- Eight Doctor Pal McGann is starring in BBC1 crime drama "New Tricks" next week (9PM 8th Aug, BBC1)

- Sky Atlantic have released new images of David Tennant in new comedy "This is Jinsy" as Mr Slightlyman: an outrageously camp wedding planner with a penchant for plastic surgery. Pictures here.

- Good news for fans of repeats: BBC3 begin repeating series 6 on Friday night but UK Channel Watch is showing Series 1 from 4PM tonight. Over the coming weekend they will be showing episodes from series 4 and the Peter Cushing movie Dr Who. and the Daleks.

- Starz, the US channel that have jointly funded Torchwood: Miracle Day have spoken about the future of the show and it's certaintly not assured. CEO Chris Albrecht said:

"Torchwood is not one of the shows we went into thinking about a yearly return. It’s about Russell T Davies - he has a lot of things on his plate. If Torchwood is not at the top of his list, that will affect the future of Torchwood."

- BBC Worldwide chief John Smith wants to drive the big BBC moneyspinner's into Asia, and that includes Doctor Who.

- Changing Rooms star Laurence Llweyn-Bowen wants to play the Master. He said:

“They are all getting younger so I would be completely disinterested in being Doctor Who,” he said. “But I would be interested in being The Master. That’s got me written all over it. Anyone who lives in a grandfather clock has me written all over him. I’m not sure whether they have brought that back though.”

- After The Daily Mirror published an article about the Doctor saving Hitler (based on the new trailer), Steven Moffat has responded saying:

“I think we can unequivocally say we’re against Hitler. I think the worst thing you can do to that awful man is take the mickey out of him on ‘Doctor Who’. Don’t worry, we’re not going to save Hitler.”

- And Moffat has always spoken about Captain Jack. First he said he wanted him to appear in A Good Man Goes to War but Barrowman was too busy filming Torchwood:

"I'd have [brought back Captain Jack] for 'A Good Man Goes To War', but John was busy doing Miracle Day... When we've got a good story, we'll do it. You can't just bring somebody back and say, 'That's a story'. I won't be thinking, 'How do you bring Captain Jack back?' I'll be thinking, 'You know what this needs? We need to bring Jack back for it'."

And he has also said that the Doctor will never appear in Torchwood:

"The Doctor could never go to Torchwood, Russell [T. Davies, Torchwood showrunner] and I both agree on that. Doctor Who has a tremendous relationship with children in Britain. They'd want to watch Torchwood then, and it's not really a children's show."

- Steven Moffat has hinted  that the show will eventually return to featuring more stand-alone episodes, rather than the current focus on long-term story arcs.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Moffat commented: "Tradition is the enemy of suspense. It's the enemy of comedy. It's the enemy of everything... It will always push back towards the anthology model. We've just amped it up to see what would happen."

- Tracy Ann-Oberman, who played head of Torchwood One Yvonne Hartman, has been interviewed by Cultbox. She talks briefly about the role and being mistaken for Alex Kingston (River Song).

"I do, I get mistaken for Alex Kingston all the time! I always have done, ever since she was in Moll Flanders. Then she was in ER and I did a stint in Casualty and everybody would get us confused.

"Now she’s in Doctor Who I get loads of her fan mail, I get stopped in the street regularly and I get masses of tweets! ‘I love you as River’, ‘I love you in Doctor Who’, ‘I love your hair’, ‘I love you in this’, ‘you were brilliant in that’... and then people get us completely mistaken and both of our careers sort of merge into one! "

Full interview here.

- An hour long documentary about Doctor Who's fandom has been created by Fanz. The film covers the vast spectrum of fandom including Conventions, Fan Fiction, Artwork, Merchandise, the Internet, Professional Fans and the dedicated following of Doctor Who. Daily Update: 26th July

Posted by The Doctor on July 26, 2011 at 11:08 AM Comments comments (0)

- Today's daily update focuses heavily on Episode 10 of series 6, "The Girl Who Waited" by Tom Macrae.

- Matt Smith has this to say about said episode: It's this mad, trippy, Kubrick-y sort of episode. But that's what Doctor Who at it's best should be. I think that's what they had in the '70's [and] that's what episode ten... does. It feels really trippy and weird."

-Macrae has recently joined Twitter (@tommacwriter) and has today been giving some small teaser for his episode:

"My ep was NEVER called 'The Green Anchor', but the Green Anchor is very, VERY important! And also the best place to be."

"Amy's favourite cat was called Biggles. What's important is - that's the name she DIDN'T use later on..."

- In other news, Moffat spoke about a Madame Vastra spin-off after the success of the character in "A Good Man Goes to War".

“I instantly pitched it to Ben Stephenson [Controller, Drama Commissioning],” showrunner Steven Moffat exclusively tells SFX. “He just said ‘…Yes!’. And then I said ‘I obviously don’t have time to do this…’ [laughs].”

“I think I might revisit them,” reveals Moffat. “They were great fun to write. Obviously the first person to think about a spin-off was me, when I was writing ‘A Good Man Goes To War’… A Victorian Silurian? Her lesbian maid? Come on!

“I was pleased by the reaction to them, but not surprised. They really cut through as characters, given how little screentime they had. I certainly wouldn’t be averse to them returning. It’s just a thing that worked, isn’t it? I love that Victorian setting, and having kicked it out of Sherlock Holmes I can always kick it in somewhere else!”

Weekend Update!

You can watch that exciting new video below and on our trailers page.

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

- A new clip from Episode 11 "The God Complex" has been unveiled too. We didn't put it here for the sake of spoilers but if you want to watch it do so here

- Karen Gillan has said that she is staying with Doctor Who for the forseeable future and will be there for next series. It's nice to have a companion that actually sticks around!

News

- Caroline Skinner has been announced as the Beth Willis' replacement as executive producer. Steven Moffat says: "The exec joining me on Doctor Who is Caroline Skinner - fresh from the wonderful Five Days, and still finishing up on a brand new show called The Fades (a fantasy horror series, written by Jack Thorne - I've seen episode 1, and it's BRILLIANT.)"

- Moffat has also teased us a little about the 2011 Christmas Special: "I think I spent the entire budget on the first page. A baptism of fire for Caroline Skinner. Literally fire. And aliens!"

- Christopher Eccleston has elaborated on why he left Doctor Who. “I left Doctor Who because I could not get along with the senior people. I left because of politics. I did not see eye-to-eye with them. I didn’t agree with the way things were being run. I didn’t like the culture that had grown up, around the series. So I left, I felt, over a principle." Full interview here.

- And that's not the only Eccleston news of the week. It has emerged that he was another of the victim's of phone hacking by News of the World, the newspaper that is being investigated for such things at the moment. This happened back in 2005 when he was playing the Doctor. He is pursuing legal action against News International, the parent company of News Of The World.
